How demographic characteristics of listeners influence their perceptions of speakers’ attributes

Shangyu Jiang, Febriana Lestari, Shireen Baghestani

In this project, we will use the dataset from the Reed Linguistics Gender and Language Project to analyze how demographic characteristics influence ratings of various personal attributes (e.g., kind vs. mean, tall vs. short, masculine vs. feminine, etc.) based on speech recordings. Our analyses are guided by the following questions: 1. Does state impact how participants perceive speakers in terms of kind or mean? 2. Does raters' education level influence their perceptions of speakers' masculinity/femininity? 3. In what attributes did raters spend more time rating? https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/M1EKER
